Stubborn grease stains can wreak havoc on your favourite clothes. Although these stains may be a real headache, there are ways to remove them using the right products and methods. Here, we’ll provide you with advice on how to get grease stains out of clothes to return them to their former glory. Whether you’re facing fresh grease stains, black grease marks or want to remove old stains, this guide will help you.

    Step 1: Pre-treat the stain

The first step in tackling grease stains is to pre-treat the affected area. Whether it's fresh grease or a set-in stain, pretreating will help break down and is the best way to get grease out of clothes. To start, gently blot the stain with a clean cloth or paper towel to remove any excess grease. Avoid rubbing the stain, as this can push the grease deeper into the fabric. Next, apply a small amount of dish soap or a grease-fighting laundry detergent directly to the stain. Gently work the soap into the fabric using your fingers or a soft brush. Let the soap sit on the stain for about 10-15 minutes to allow it to penetrate the grease. This pretreatment step will help loosen the stain and prepare it for the next steps in the stain-removal process.

Step 2: Choose the right stain remover

Now that you've pre-treated the grease stain, it's time to choose the right stain remover to effectively remove the remaining grease. When it comes to selecting a stain remover, it's important to consider the fabric of your clothing and the type of grease stain you're dealing with.

How to get cooking grease, black grease and old grease stains out of clothes

Any grease stain can be tough to tackle. Like oil stains, cooking grease stains need to be treated quickly. Black grease, with a dark and thick consistency, and old grease stains, which have penetrated deeper into the fabric, can be more difficult to remove. Luckily, the Vanish Oxi Action formula is strong enough to tackle all types of tough grease stains.

With anionic and non-ionic surfactants, the Vanish Oxi Action Liquid can be used to remove grease stains safely, even in a cold wash. It's gentle enough to be used on delicates, too, from your favourite wool jumper to your staple silk dress. For white garments, use the Vanish Crystal White Liquid to remove grease stains quickly and safely without damaging your whites, at the same time as protecting them from yellowing and greying.

Step 3: Apply the stain remover

Before going in with the stain remover, test in a small inconspicuous area before full application. This will help to ensure no damage occurs to your clothing.

Once tested, apply 2 ml of the liquid and rub into the stain using the top of the dosage cap. Leave the liquid on the stain for a maximum of 10 minutes. After soaking, wash in the machine as normal. Use your usual detergent and add a 50 ml dose of Vanish Crystal White Liquid

Remember to follow the care instructions on the clothing label to determine the appropriate washing method. For most fabrics, machine washing on the appropriate setting with a regular laundry detergent should be sufficient. However, for delicate or sensitive fabrics, hand washing may be necessary. Make sure to use cold water when washing the garment, as hot water can set the grease stain and make it more difficult to remove. Once the garment is washed, check for any remaining stains before proceeding to the next step of the stain-removal process.

Step 4: Repeat the process if necessary

In some cases, one round of stain removal may not completely eliminate the grease stain from your clothes. If you still notice traces of the stain after washing and checking, don't worry. It's not uncommon for stubborn grease stains to require multiple treatments. Simply repeat the stain removal process, starting with pre-treating the stain and following the steps outlined in this blog. Be patient and persistent, as it may take a few attempts to completely remove the grease stain. Remember to choose the right stain remover for the fabric and follow the instructions carefully. With determination and the right techniques, you'll be able to successfully remove even the toughest grease stains and restore your clothes to their original condition.
